Q: Imagine you have to quit drawing for a while because maybe of an injury. Do you think your drawing skills are getting worse after a longer break? Or is it more like driving a bike: If you once have learned it, you will never forget it? A: I think the physical act of drawing, i.e. your hand responding to the impulses sent from your brain, is a skill that can degrade somewhat from lack of use. If you don’t frequent MAD‘s website often, you are missing out on some original and funny stuff. They post daily content that is often all new and very timely stuff that is more than a few notches above your typical meme. They also sprinkle in classic features like Don Martin, Dave Berg, Spy vs. Spy and more. The above image is the very first one I ever did for them, done in traditional media using ink, Dr. Martin dyes and airbrush. I’ve been invited to be a special guest at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con this fall. The event is taking place November 21-23rd at the Deltaplex on 2500 Turner Ave. NW in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Lovely Anna will be my booth babe, and I’ll be hawking my prints, original pages of MAD art, books, and doing sketches and caricatures all weekend. I’ll also be doing a presentation at some point during the con, and it will be a combination caricature drawing lesson and how caricature and MAD Magazine fit together… so not my usual boring talk about my work.
