Totally Useless Fax Dept. You would think it a fairly common occurrence that, in the process of doing movie and TV parodies for MAD, I would often end up drawing the same actors over and over in different shows or films. Actually outside of when an actor appears in the same role in sequels or movies series, that hasn’t happened all that much for me. Q: When teaching people to draw caricatures, do you have them draw a hundred variations of a nose, eyes, chin, etc., or do you have them jump right in and attempt to draw caricatures. In other words, what’s the best way to practice drawing caricatures? A: While practicing individual features on their own is a useful exercise for learning to draw those features convincingly, it doesn’t really help you get any better at drawing caricatures. The comic book world is in mourning today. The wonderfully talented and equally wonderful person, comic book icon Stan Sakai, finally lost his wife Sharon today after a long battle with a brain tumor. Stan and Sharon were like rays of sunshine whenever you ran into them at a comic con or a cartoonist event. I would be hard pressed to think of anyone on this planet that deserved any form of heartbreak or sadness less than the Sakais. Clicky to Embiggen… When one of the main writers of the Showtime show “Homeland” saw the MAD parody written by David Shayne and drawn by me, he contacted me to ask about getting some prints of the splash page. Naturally I obliged, but I added an extra print asking for some autographs by the cast for me. Click image for a closer look… Back in 2008 I did this illustration of the cover of MAD Kids, the short lived but much loved spin off of MAD put together for the Nick Jr. set. Pencils and a few closeups of some elements below, as well as the image as it appear on the cover of MAD Kids #13. This is obviously a takeoff on the famous Norman Rockwell painting “Freedom from Want”, a popular vehicle for satire in MAD and elsewhere.
