The comic book world is in mourning today. The wonderfully talented and equally wonderful person, comic book icon Stan Sakai, finally lost his wife Sharon today after a long battle with a brain tumor. Stan and Sharon were like rays of sunshine whenever you ran into them at a comic con or a cartoonist event. I would be hard pressed to think of anyone on this planet that deserved any form of heartbreak or sadness less than the Sakais. This year the comic’s industry came together to help support Stan, Sharon and their family with a fundraising auction and a book full of tribute art… READ MORE

The Wall of Shame: Homeland!

Clicky to Embiggen… When one of the main writers of the Showtime show “Homeland” saw the MAD parody written by David Shayne and drawn by me, he contacted me to ask about getting some prints of the splash page. Naturally I obliged, but I added an extra print asking for some autographs by the cast for me. Monday MADness: Star Wars Thanksgiving!

Click image for a closer look… Back in 2008 I did this illustration of the cover of MAD Kids, the short lived but much loved spin off of MAD put together for the Nick Jr. set. Pencils and a few closeups of some elements below, as well as the image as it appear on the cover of MAD Kids #13. This is obviously a takeoff on the famous Norman Rockwell painting “Freedom from Want”, a popular vehicle for satire in MAD and elsewhere. Sunday Mailbag- Empty!

I haven’t had to post this image in a long time, but I am fresh out of questions for the Sunday mailbag! Well, it’s not really completely empty, but the only ones I’ve got right now are either repeats of previous questions or of the “can you teach me how to cross-hatch?” or “how do you exaggerate people in caricature?” variety which aren’t really questions so much as they are requests for long and involved tutorials, and are needing a lot more time than I can give for this weekly feature. Theme park caricature sample circa 1998 All the accusations of rape being leveled at legendary humorist Bill Cosby are really shocking. I’d like to believe they are not true, but with so many of them coming from women with really no motive to speak out other than to let people know the truth, they just cannot be ignored. Couple that with Cosby’s bizarre refusal to say anything about the accusations…no denials, no explanations, no comments whatsoever…it looks very bad.
