The last of my “Supermen” series from my new limited edition print, “Man of Steel”‘s Henry Cavill. Here’s Tom Welling from the moment he finally appeared onscreen as Superman, after a mere decade of beating around the bush on “Smallville”. The reason Welling appears after Brandon Routh in the lineup, and is wearing the year “2011” instead of 2001 when “Smallville” debuted, is because of my rules of inclusion in the print. I am caricaturing the actors as they looked when the portrayed Superman proper, in TV or film, and with the requisite year of that appearance. Superman as played by Brandon Routh in 2006’s “Superman Returns”. I did the parody of this film for MAD, and used the “censored” gag in there as well. It refers to an internet rumor that the filmmakers had to digitally edit many of the scenes in the movie to reduce Routh’s “package”, which was supposedly distracting. According to this article, that is an urban myth that is not true. Still funny, though. READ MORE

It’s probably fitting that my posting of Christopher Reeve‘s Superman falls on the Fourth of July… his version of the character was the most iconic and All-Amercian there has ever been, IMO. This is the fourth of eight “Supermen” from my upcoming limited edition print “Men of Steel”, debuting Wednesday at San Diego Comic-Con and onsale in the Studio Store shortly thereafter! READ MORE

Superman number three from my upcoming “Men of Steel” limited edition print: David Wilson. This is the one most people will react to with a “who?”, but Wilson’s Superman fits my criteria of inclusion: portrayed a live-action Superman proper on television or film. This was from a 1975 ABC special that was a shortened, edited version of the 1966 Broadway musical “It’s a Bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman”. Bob Holiday was most famous for portraying Superman in the original Broadway show (which ran for 129 performances), but as that was not ever officially on TV or film, that doesn’t fit my criteria. Here’s the second of my “Men of Steel” caricatures- George Reeves. As I mentioned yesterday, my rules here include caricaturing the actor as they looked onscreen as Superman when they first appeared as the character, including the year on the chest. Reeves’ first appearance was in the 1951 theatrical film “Superman and the Mole Men”, which served as a “pilot” of sorts for the television series “The Adventures of Superman” (1952-1958), which also starred Reeves.
