Sketch o’the Week- Vince Vaughn!

August 12th, 2015 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Here’s the last of my “True Detective” series, “Frank Semyon” as portrayed by Vince Vaughn. I have to say I was disappointed in this season of “True Detective” (Don’t worry, no spoilers here). The storytelling was convoluted, introducing motivations and characters involved in key events almost right before the plot lines they were part of were resolved. That’s not very fair when viewers spend 8 plus hours trying to understand the story behind the crime being investigated. Sloppy and poor storytelling, and a waste of a dynamite cast. Ah, well… The show did have some great moments. As always, this sketch is available for purchase… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Caricaturing a Walking Caricature?

August 9th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Has it ever occurred to you that you might draw a caricature of someone’s face which already looks like a “natural” caricature? How to you manage an already exaggerated face? I am mostly referring to live caricature. A: There is really no such thing as someone who already looks like a caricature of themselves. The very definition of caricature is to exaggerated someone’s features and “look”. That means you start at what they really look like and go from there. If a person is already funny looking you just have a different starting point. Some people have more obvious features for you to exaggerate,… READ MORE

Some Recent Jeff Dunham Stuff

August 7th, 2015 | Posted in Freelancing

Jeff started doing a show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas late last year, and he had me do a bunch of different pieces for him for various merchandise. Some of that stuff is finally showing up in his online store (I think it had been exclusive to the Vegas gift store until recently) so I think it’s safe to show them here. He has another set of playing card illustrations as well, so I am not sure where these last few images are being used. READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday #14

This piece was done in 1995 for Twin Cities Business Monthly, and accompanied a story about insurance fraud. The client wanted a 50’s comic book feel to it, so I naturally went with an E.C. look…especially given the title they wanted for the comic. This was done using the old “film pos/acetate overlay” technique that was used for coloring comic books for decades before the digital revolution. It involved taking the inks to a production house that put it on a stat camera and produced two prints of it on clear acetate. One was just the linework on the clear sheet, but adding registration marks… READ MORE
