It’s another thrilling tale from the live caricaturist trenches at your friendly neighborhood theme park! There are many annoying things that transpire around you when working at a theme park, but by far the worst is repetitive noise. Things like the repeating park soundtrack, shows that play near you a dozen times a day, games barkers that say the same thing over and over on their microphones, etc. Theme park management usually does nothing to help people keep their sanity when things get out of hand, so sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. The TV series “Heroes” is getting a reboot this fall. I did the art on the parody of the original series back in MAD #487, March 2008, written by Desmond Devlin. For some reason (can’t remember why) I scanned the final pencils of the three individual pages before inking and coloring them. Q: Has a director ever asked MAD Magazine to do a parody of their movie? Or have you guys only ever picked films to do parodies on of your own volition? A: I don’t know of any specific examples, but I have been told by some of the longtime Usual Gang of Idiots that more than a few movies studios/production companies would send MAD materials on their films to try and get them to do a parody of it. A couple of months ago I shared the announcement of a “Cruise with Cartoonists” event to take place next January. I was one of several guests set to do presentations, drawing sessions, classes, etc. Seven days in the Carribean… it would have been fun. Proceeds would benefit the National Cartoonists Society Foundation and its programs like the Milt Gross Fund and “Cartooning for Kids”. Unfortunately the cruise did not meet the minimum number of bookings needed to proceed, so the cruise line has cancelled it. It occurred to me recently that I had never watched a single episode of “Firefly”, the cult-classic, fan-favorite and short lived Joss Whedon TV series. Just started checking it out. I didn’t have much trouble getting The Lovely Anna to agree to watch it with me, even though she’s already seen the series. Mostly that’s because of the guy above, “Firefly” star Nathan Fillion. The Lovely Anna loves Nathan Fillion. She has never missed and episode of “Castle”, his current and long running TV show.
