Sneak Peek: Forcesonic Lightsaber Manual

December 15th, 2015 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This was a very different project. MAD asked me to do the art for spoof of a “user manual”… for a lightsaber. Written by Scott Maiko, it’s a clever take on the goofy seriousness of high tech toy manuals with a lot of Star Wars thrown in (I guess MAD heard about that movie coming out this week). Anyway I had to mimic the art style of these types of manuals, but still add some humor to it. The above illustration is the first page “beauty shot”, which MAD printed in black and white so it matched the manual’s format, but had me do in… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Caricature vs. Cartooning?

December 13th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I am curious if there is a difference in drawing a “standard” caricature (head shots, or your Sketch of the Week, etc.) vs. a “cartoony” caricature, (ie one that involves putting the subject in a situation like “tennis player” or “astronaut”) Does the drawing style change, or can it change, to further emphasise “Cartoon” aspects? Is the only difference really adding a location/job/costume? A: Within the context of your question, no. There really isn’t a difference when you are drawing a “head & shoulders” caricature and one involving a full body or action situation. Not in the approach of the caricature itself. It’s still… READ MORE

It’s only two weeks until Christmas day! Time’s running out to get one of my new limited edition Doctor Who (or Batman, or Superman, or Sherlock) prints in time to give to that special someone for the holidays. The Lovely Anna and I have been on a much-needed vacation this week and get back tomorrow, so Monday will be a big shipping day. All orders will be going out, and that gives you only 9 shipping days until Christmas. I promise this will be my last shameless shill for the season. We return to our regular mindless blogging on Sunday.   READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- James Spader!

December 9th, 2015 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

The Lovely Anna and I watch “The Blacklist” regularly. It’s a guilty pleasure, mainly because of this guy… Red Redington himself, James Spader. The show has some HUGE plot holes and a suspension of disbelief that borders on the ridiculous, but Spader’s character is so mesmerizing you can forgive how criminals can somehow escape from the FBI in a helicopter over the skies of Washington DC like the airspace isn’t blanketed by radar and yet in 15 seconds the techies in their ops headquarters can get the name and intimate details of a suspect’s entire life using only a partial picture of their left ear… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Sculpture, 3D?

December 6th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: In the Gallery/Misc. section I love the Obama vs. Reagan boxing sculpture. Do you get involved much in caricature sculpture or 3D modeling software? If so, what type of clay or modeling software do you use? A: Here’s the image mentioned in the question: I did not do the sculpture, this was based on drawings I did. I have had my work turned into a 3 dimensional object a number of times, this statuette being one example. Here’s a few others: I have only ever dabbled with sculpture, and I have never used any 3D modeling software. I used to have a box of… READ MORE
