Sunday “Glenn-efit” in Las Vegas

January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in General

Just a reminder, I’ll be joining a gaggle of Las Vegas area caricaturists this Sunday at the Downtown Crown Pub in Las Vegas from 1 to 4 pm to benefit the medical and rehab fund of Glenn Ferguson, our fellow caricaturist who was badly injured in a brutal attack on Jan 1st. We’ll all be drawing live caricatures for donations, and there will be a raffle with some great prizes including massage and spa packages, tickets to Penn and Teller, signed prints and books, and an original page of of my MAD art from the parody of “House of Cards”. There will also be belly… READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday #19

This was supposed to be the cover of a book about internet gambling. I did the art in December of 2000, and as far as I know it was never used. I’m not sure the author ever found a publisher for the book at all. A lot of book deals go down like that. An author wants to make a “pitch” to various publishers either with the concept and outline or a finished manuscript, and feels like the need a visual to go along with the pitch. I never work on spec, so I expect to be paid for the art whether the book sees… READ MORE

Totally swamped right now so no time for a more elaborate sketch this week. This is a small, rough study for a job I’m working on right now. READ MORE

What Gets Drawn in Vegas…

January 19th, 2016 | Posted in General

I’ll be drawing live caricatures along with a bunch of other Las Vegas area caricaturists this Sunday from 1-4pm at the Downtown Crown Pub, all proceeds to benefit the support fund of Glenn Ferguson, whose plight I have shared previously. It just so happens I was going to be in Vegas for a different fundraising effort from Monday-Wednesday, and when I found out about this I was able to change my flight to arrive a day early and participate. There will also be a raffle for which I have donated a page of my original MAD artwork. The event is being organized by Celestia Ward… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Boston Public!

Remember that TV show from the early 2000’s about a Boston public high school and the daily drama between it’s faculy, staff and students called “Boston Public”? That’s okay… neither does anyone else. But MAD did a parody of it in issue #413, January 2002! Desmond Devlin wrote it and I drew it. I think I even got paid for it. Anyway, here’s a look at the art: READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- iPad Pro?

January 17th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: You mentioned the Wacom Cintiq in an earlier post. Have you had a chance to check out the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil accessory? I know it just launched in November, but it sounds like a very inspiring portable drawing tool for producing rough and quality finished art, and a natural for caricature art. Perhaps this is the beginning of a real transition to tablets from traditional PC’s for artists. A: I have not tried the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. My pal, illustrator Ed Steckley, recently reviewed it for a tech website. His verdict appears to be “hardware good, software needs catching… READ MORE

This spot illustration is from the April 1998 issue of Golden State Warriors Magazine. It was for a kids page section and depicts then rookie player Adonal Foyle. This is a very early example of my fledgling digital illustration style. READ MORE
