Q: Is it hard to turn off your “artist mode”? That is, do you encounter new faces on TV or in the newspapers or even during real-life conversations and find yourself calculating angles and shapes and relationships as if you were going to draw them? A: It is impossible to turn that switch off once you have it going, or at least I find it impossible. I do not go around seeing EVERYONE in caricature, but sometimes I become fascinated by a person’s face or some aspect of their appearance and am driven to distraction by it. This can happen when I am watching a… READ MORE

Back in the late 90’s a company called Parroty Interactive contracted me to do art for a series of spoof computer games. This was back when such games came on these shiny disks called “CD ROMS”. I did varying amounts of art for different games with titles like “The X-Fools” and “Winblows 98”. The project I did the most work for was a game called “Star Warped”, which was obviously a take on Star Wars. A lot of the art I did was just in black and white, as they had some color artists that were doing the colors and formatting the images for the… READ MORE

I collaborated with MAD art director and illustrator Sam Viviano on this cover for the latest issue of HITS Magazine, which celebrates their 30th anniversary. He did the layout and composition, I did the finished illustration. I”m not sure what the Alfred E. Neuman connection is, but he’s been on their covers before. The other caricatures are of major music label executives and producers. READ MORE

Goodnight Batcave, written by Dave Croatto with art by me and the first of a new line of MAD parody books, is officially released tomorrow! Here’s a peek at a couple of the work-in-progress penciled pages and cover from the book (some of the art and copy were tweaked in the final version): Don’t forget to pick up a copy for a holiday gift for that little caped crusader in your life. Yes, it’s quite appropriate for little kids, although adults will get a chuckle from some of the more subtle gags and nods to the Batmanverse and MAD. READ MORE

Q: Your Sketch o’the Week book looks great. When are you going to do a “The Art of Tom Richmond” book, with high quality reproductions of some of the work you’ve done? A: Never say never, but pretty much never… for a couple of reasons. Vanity press books are not my thing. I had to do a lot of self convincing to do the “Sketch o’the Week” book because I feel if one is going to do a book, the content needs to be more than just a bunch of eye candy. The only reason I did the SotW book was that it would give… READ MORE
