The Los Angeles chapter of the National Cartoonists Society is having a chapter benefit event this Sunday at the home of Sally Lazarus (widow of the late great Mell Lazarus) featuring a live auction with a ton of awesome original cartoon artwork. The incomparable Sergio Aragonés regularly creates masterpieces, but a couple of years ago he did a piece for a MAD book that is a true work of genius, even by his standards. In the book Inside MAD, Sergio created a fold out spread that depicted virtually every major contributor to the magazine in it’s 60 plus years of publication. I’m not sure what the criteria was that determined if an artist/writer/editor was included, but I was grateful to be one of them. Above is a closeup of me by Sergio! Q: Ever had to do a convincing “bad” drawing–either for a tutorial or something like a child’s drawing? Every time I see a “bad” drawing done on purpose by a good artist, it always looks too… er… “good”… there’s good structure, good linework… it’s almost like the artist doesn’t know how to do a bad drawing anymore. How might you approach doing such a drawing? A: Some people would say I don’t need any special approach to do a bad drawing… I just let my natural talent take over! If you are in the Dallas area come visit me and a bunch of the Usual Gang of Idiots (not listed above… Annie Gaines!!!) at the North Texas Comic Book show from 9:30- 5 pm at the Doubletree Hotel in the Dallas Market Center. I will not have my full compliment of junk to sell there (quick one day show), but I’ll have copies of my Sketch o’the Week and Mad Art of Caricature book, a bunch of mini-prints, some blank MAD sketch covers, a few pages of original MAD artwork, and I’ll be doing commissions and caricatures.
