Paste Magazine has an exclusive sneak peek at the cover (by Mark Fredrickson shown above) and one of the articles in the upcoming MAD #545… a parody of the classic children’s book “No David!” entitled “No Donald!”, written by Kenny Keil with art by MAD‘s art director Sam Viviano and colorist Jim Campbell. Back in MAD #513 (Feb 2012) I did the art for a “MAD 20” piece written by Kit Lively & Scott Nickel making fun of the big bag of crazy that was Charlie Sheen. I have this caricature of him on my comic-con table banner and it often stops people in their tracks because of the funny mash-up concept. Whoops… looks like I have run out of mailbag questions. Well, I have been asked and answered over 500 of them since starting this blog. It’s entirely possible that people have run out of questions. There are only so many questions people might have about freelancing, illustration, MAD, etc. So maybe this feature has run its course. I guess that’s up to you. Since the news broke a few weeks ago about DC finally moving MAD out to Burbank to join the rest of the comic publishing division, I’ve read a lot of opinions on what the results of such a move are going to be. They range from yet another obituary on the death of MAD (these started right around the time Harvey Kurtzman left the magazine in 1956) to those who think in this day and age it doesn’t matter where it’s published, because all the artists and writers are freelance anyway and where the magazine is put together is immaterial. Back in MAD #488 (April 2008) the editorial staff decided to do a thought-provoking conceptual theme issue. In typical MAD fashion, they eschewed more meaningful concepts and ideas for something suitably low brow (and I mean LOW… as in simian). The concept they came up with was the “All Monkey Issue”, filled from front to back with gags about monkeys and apes. They even did a parody of the TV show “Monk” with Mort Drucker drawing a monkey instead of the lead character. Tony Shalhoub must have been disappointed (although the monkey looked a little like him more than occasionally)! My job for the issue… READ MORE
