Sunday Mailbag- Comic Con Commissions?

April 23rd, 2017 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: You charge only $30 for a pencil sketch caricature at your booth at comic con but they start at $150 on your website. What gives? Why can’t I email you a picture and have you do it for $30? A: I get this one sometimes after I do a convention and people who see me there then email me and ask me to do one of the con prices commissions through the mail, which I will not do. The ones I do at comic cons are my live caricature style quick sketch caricatures like I do at theme parks. I take a little more… READ MORE

April 20th, 2017 | Posted in News

The Lovely Anna and I will be at table 0-3 in Artists Alley this weekend at the 2017 C2E2 show! The convention runs tomorrow from 10-7, Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-5. I’ll have the usual pile of crap to sell including what’s left of my limited edition prints, signed copies of The Mad Art of Caricature, Sketch o’the Week Vol. 1 and Goodnight Batcave, comic con exclusive mini prints, signed copies of MAD and, of course, I’ll be doing caricatures, commissions and MAD sketch covers. I’ll even have some original art pages from MAD, but I’m only bringing those to the shows I drive to… READ MORE

MAD Art of Caricature- Korean Edition!

April 18th, 2017 | Posted in News

Two years ago this August I wrote about how a publisher in Korea purchased the Korean foreign language rights to my book The Mad Art of Caricature, and planned on publishing a Korean language edition of it. After having heard from some caricature artist friends in Korea that the book was in recently print, I finally got my three copies that were part of the original deal in the mail yesterday. The publisher took a lot of liberties with the placement of the art, and made some weird choices. Especially on the cover, where they moved some of the images around ignoring the fact that… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Goodnight Batcave Roughs!

April 17th, 2017 | Posted in Monday MADness

Here’s a peek at some of the preliminary sketches I did to work out how we were going to handle the look of Batman for Goodnight Batcave. Originally he started out more comic-bookish, and then we started working him toward a more cartoony and exaggerated form, loosely based on the “Batman- The Animated Series” look. His chin got even bigger and his upper body more exaggerated in the final roughs:   READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: To Tell the Truth?

April 16th, 2017 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I draw caricatures at weddings all the time. Recently I was hired to draw at a wedding by the mother of the bride. She was a really nice lady and I had a great time drawing at the event, but I ran into a bit of a dilemma when it came time to draw her. Physically, her most defining feature was that she had no neck or jaw line. Her head looked like is had sort of melted onto her shoulders. She was obviously a bit self conscious about it, so I did a drawing that played down her lack of a neck but… READ MORE
