I’m currently in China with a few fellow cartoonists where we will be lecturing and participating in a China-U.S. Cartooning cultural exchange at the Jilin Animation Institute in Changchun. I have had a run the last few days on registration for my caricature workshop in Pittsburgh, PA June 9-11th… we are down to only two more available spots! Monday MADness… Tuesday edition. For a brief time in 2002 I was MAD‘s go-to artist for the parodies of all films starring both Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson! That was a short lived specialty, but I did get to do the art for MAD‘s spoof of “The Royal Tenebaums” (MAD 417, May 2002) and this film, “Behind Enemy Lines”. Q: Can just anyone learn how to draw caricatures, granted they have some artistic talent in the first place? A: I guess that depends on at what level of success you consider needs to be reached before the artist in question can “draw caricatures”. Art is subjective. Anyone can pick up a pencil and move it around on a piece of paper and that’s drawing. Mastering drawing, or any art form, is a different story. That’s a lifelong pursuit.
