Q: How do you choose the colors for your drawings? Is there something like a Tom-Richmond-color-palette? A: My PhotoShop swatch palette is a Frankenstein-ed amalgamation of colors which includes ones I have found I like the look of in print and kept a sample of for future use, standard PS colors, and a palette of comic book orientated colors I got off the internet from somewhere years ago. The folks at Comic Con International are stepping up their game with this nifty welcome box containing our exhibitor badges and other goodies for the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, which just came in the mail yesterday. The Lovely Anna and I will be there at table I-02 throughout the show with our usual assortment of crap including signed copies of The Mad Art of Caricature, Sketch o’the Week Volume One and Goodnight Batcave, numerous limited edition prints including a brand new one that I’ll be doing sneak peeks of shortly, signed copies of MAD, assorted mini prints, and of course personal caricatures/commissions. Oh, ye of little faith. A week or so back I posted about the uncertainty of MAD‘s future since basically none of the current longtime staff of editors and art directors were moving out west with the closing of MAD‘s NYC based offices. My post was mostly about the fact that DC Entertainment has given no one any idea of their plans or who might be taking the helm of the magazine. Q: What age did you start drawing caricatures? A: I’ve been drawing caricatures all my life, since I was a little kid, I just didn’t know what I was drawing were caricatures. I thought they were just funny drawings of people. It wasn’t until later in life I associated what I was doing with the term “caricature”. When I was in high school I drew a series of comics called “Baby Bill”, which were satirical “adventures” of me and my high school buddies but as babies. Actually I am on vacation (sort of, brought some work with me) in Florida right now but here’s what is on the drawing board currently: “Z People” Comic Book– Inking the last of this 47 page behemoth right now. Looking to be done by the end of the month. MAD– Just finished a two page feature for #547 (rare issue without a movie or TV parody for me) but already have the script for a TV show parody for issue #548 Corporate caricatures– I’ve got a new gig doing caricatures of executives/employees for a big tech company.
