A week or so ago I did the Wizard Word Chicago Comic Con, and when there my old pal Patrick Williams came by my booth with a surprise for me. Patrick was an art director, inker, letterer, and colorist for NOW Comics back in the day, and we worked together on the Married… with Children series among other things. He had run across a couple of old originals of mine among his piles of stuff, and bright them to give back to me. Next week is my last workshop of 2017, and I’m starting to think about possible locations for 2018. I am close to finalizing plans for a couple in the L.A. area in January, and I have already scheduled one in Switzerland in conjunction with a cartooning school neat Zurich in August. I am thinking seriously of doing one in Atlanta in February, but have nothing scheduled yet. Q: I do caricatures more as a hobby right now but hope to do more of it as part of a business. As I explore the market I would like to throw this out for debate: I wonder if the appreciation for the value of caricature and cartoon art has decreased over time due to the fact that there is so much fragmentation in how people can view art now. Art can be quickly accessed and viewed on the internet, mobile phones, YouTube, TV, e-books, e-mags etc. Is traditional caricature and cartooning now considered more “old school”?
