Q: I did a caricature gig for the opening of a local restaurant. My first customer was a heavy woman in her ’50s, my first drawing of the night. She had such a roundish, potatoish face and I did my best but threw away the first one and didn’t do much better on the second. Number One Son Thomas studied overseas this spring/summer is a little town names Eichstätt In Germany, about 1.5 hours northwest of Munich. The Lovely Anna and I went to visit him (I also taught a workshop in Munich while there). Germany is one of the few countries who still produces their own version of MAD, where they license the magazine and reprint a certain amount of the US material while also doing their own content, covers, etc. One of my missions was to find a copy of a German MAD while there. These are some style guides for generic hands for an animated project I am working on right now. They are just a bunch of general hand gestures that the CGI artists will use for their basic constructs, male and female versions. The difference between the two, beside the obvious longer fingernails for the female hands, is mainly in the size and “meaty-ness” of the palm and fingers. In general females have smaller and more slender hands, where males are thicker and meatier. Interesting enough when I researched it, women and men have different sized fingers. Q: Which kind of easel do you use when drawing live caricatures? A: I don’t use an easel per se but rather a drawing/drafting table or drawing board when I do live caricatures. It depends on if I’m drawing them at a theme park or a convention/event. At the theme parks we use drafting tables that have been modified. I replace the laminated pressboard table top with a custom made laminated plywood board (much lighter and thinner) that has a drawing paper holding tray on the underside of it, a clip scavenged off of a clipboard for holding the piece of paper I am drawing… READ MORE
