Clicky to Embiggen Here’s a look at my annual Thanksgiving illustration for Sports Illustrated Kids. The final image has captions/word balloons explaining the gags for the various athletes… but if you want to read those you’ll just have to go out and buy the November issue of SI Kids! READ MORE
Here’s a rare look at a splash page I did for a MAD parody from roughs through final pencils, inks, and color. The published final is above. It’s rare because I very seldom scan my final pencils in before inking them, so I have few examples of the pencil stage. This is a parody of the short lived TV show “Samantha Who?” as written by Dick DeBartolo and appeared in MAD #489, May 2008. Clicky to embiggen. Pencil Roughs Final Pencils Inks Final Color READ MORE
Q: Is it more difficult to draw ‘realism’ and general portraits, than to draw caricatures? Initially I thought it would be easier to draw caricatures as I have seen street artists draw caricatures quite quickly and they look great but seeing yours it looks quite difficult. With a normal portrait you just draw what you are looking at but with caricatures you have to sort of make it up yourself, larger forehead, larger chin etc then working out with exaggeration goes with each individual. A: I think it’s equally difficult to draw a truly excellent caricature and an excellent realistic portrait, but from a technical… READ MORE

While I don’t have time to do many personal commission outside of the comic-cons I work, I do sometimes do caricatures for corporate clients for executives that might be retiring or being honored in some way. What’s the difference between a personal caricature and one done for corporate client? Two things actually. One is that the subject is generally unaware of the project and I am not subjected to being art directed by the person whom the drawing depicts, and therefore avoid any complications brought on by vanity or unrealistic self-image. The second reason is plain and simple… money. I am comfortable charging corporate clients the… READ MORE
This is a two page spread I did for the book Inside MAD back in 2013. It was just for the book and never appeared in the magazine. Inside MAD is a large book full of rarely seen reprints of MAD features as chosen by the Usual gang of Idiots, as well as essays by a number of famous entertainers about how MAD influenced their careers. The introduction of the book is written by the very successful comedy film writer, director and producer Judd Apatow. In his intro, he points out that MAD never has done a spoof of any of his movies or TV… READ MORE
Q: Whenever I need to browse the internet for a reference I worry that any photo that comes up has been and is being used by a hundred other artists. We’re all referencing the same 2004 Prius or photo of Johnny Carson! So I try to find videos for my reference material so I can pause the subject in a way that is hopefully different from everyone else’s reference photo. Do you ever run into this? You must reference a TON when putting together a parody. A: Everybody uses the web to search for reference these days, so it’s common to be working from the… READ MORE
