I’ve just booked one of my three day caricature workshops in the New York City area, specifically Long Island City, May 4th-6th! Dates: May 4-6th 2018 Location: Hilton Garden Inn Long Island City, 29-21 41st Ave., Long Island City, NY 11101 Class size: Limited to 12 students I had a workshop there in August and it was a great location, just a short walk from the Queens Plaza subway station. This one will be held on a Fri-Sun rather than weekdays like the last one, and in a bigger room. We also have a group rate that is significantly cheaper than these rooms usually go… READ MORE

The National Cartoonists Society Foundation‘s Thanks&Giving art auction to benefit hurricane relief efforts is down to its final two days. If you have not at least visited Heritage Auction‘s auction NCSF auction pages, do yourself a favor and go take a look. Bid if you can or wish, but enjoy looking at the images. There are some amazing pieces in there. Looking at them myself I’m reminded how rare these sorts of pieces of original art are starting to become. A few weeks ago I was at a cartooning get together and I overheard an artist I admire telling another how he now does 100%… READ MORE

Q: Do you still ever hesitate when you start inking a freshly penciled piece? Or is it old hat by now? A: I would not say I hesitate to ink anything, but I’m never thrilled to do it because it’s an exercise in controlled chaos for me. However I am long over the “my inks suck all the life out of my pencils” phase. That only happens when you try to slavishly reproduce every nuance of a pencil drawing with ink. I am not a great inker. In the 18 years I have been doing inked illustrations, and to be honest I didn’t do a… READ MORE

It seems like right after I do a workshop somewhere and post a wrap up about it, I get a bunch of people emailing me or commenting that they didn’t know it was happening and they wished they would have so they could have participated. I am not sure how to fix that, since I announce them as they get booked here and across all my social media accounts, periodically do a “still available” post if they have not sold out, and have a big banner on the right of my blogroll that links to the workshop page. I don’t know what else to do… READ MORE
