This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the final splash page and all the pencil roughs for the Desmond Devlin penned mash-up parody of the first three Daniel Craig 007 movies entitled “Casebook: SPYFAIL- The Battle of the Bonds” from MAD #521, June 2013. These are true “roughs” as I just drew blank heads (and made notes as to who is supposed to be who.. although some might say I should do that even with my finished caricatures) and everything is very sketchy, meaning I must have worked out the caricatures and drew things out fully on the art boards. I just finished up a workshop in Chicago this past weekend. We had a great group! Thanks, everybody! I rarely have to cancel workshops for lack of interest but the workshop I have scheduled for Las Vegas, Sept 7-9th, is looking more and more like a casualty with only four students signed up so far. I’m setting a May 10th deadline for getting enough students sign up to meet my minimum of 8 or I will have to cancel the class. So, if you have been thinking about attending the Las Vegas workshop, get off the fence and sign up! In other workshop news, I… READ MORE

Last week MAD launched it’s new website and announced a lot of plans for a renewed and higher profile online and social media presence. Plans include multiple daily original cartoons and content on the MAD website, and a new blog coming this summer. On the social media side you’ll already see MAD has a very active Twitter and Instagram feed with multiple daily gags, comics and images. They also plan on posting a lot of original content on Facebook, but that is all going to be published in Russian to cut to the chase. There is also going to be an upcoming MAD podcast hosted… READ MORE

Q: Looking at the recent Mad magazine’s “This Is Us” parody, I noticed something that has something to do what I am asking about. I saw a panel that you drew that had various cartoon characters in the background, Fred Flintstone, Homer Simpson…etc…drawn in their style. I can understand that because it is a parody that would be acceptable, but what if you were asked to draw/paint in another artist’s style like Norman Rockwell…or Mort Drucker…etc… Have you ever been asked to draw another artist’s style? Is there any legal trouble doing that? I have a project that I am gonna work on for a… READ MORE

I’m in Chicago teaching one of my three day workshops this weekend. This is the class illustration… I caricature everyone in my MAD Magazine technique and they all get a print of it, olus a bunch of other goodies. Oh, and I teach everyone how I draw caricatures. Most of my wprkshops are sold out, but I have spaces available in some workshops this fall in Las Vegas, Minnesota, Los Angeles and Phoenix. Check out all the details here! READ MORE
