Another episode in this occasional feature where I show something from my studio and tell the story behind it. Here we have another seriously awesome Bat-item- a 3 foot tall statue of Bats as he appeared in Frank Miller‘s “The Dark Knight Returns”. That 1980’s graphic novel was what really got me back into comics. I got this as a little present to myself after wrapping up a killer book job. READ MORE

I’m under the gun in the studio suddenly, so here’s an old Sketch o’the Week of rock geezer Ozzy Osbourne that I added some digital grays to for the book. READ MORE

It’s been a while since I posted one of these “On the Drawing Board” updates… above is a fun little spot illustration I did for Scholastic a couple of months ago. A lock of George Washington‘s hair was recently found and authenticated, and this illustrated the blurb about the discovery in one of their magazines. This is a bit of a quiet time in the studio… I’m between MAD jobs and working on several smaller projects, including a few personal illustrations I have been trying to work in around the edges: NCS Reubens Illustration– I did not do the Reuben brochure art this year, but… READ MORE

Okay, the MAD offices in New York have only been closed for about four months so it might be a little too soon to use the word “reunion”, but we had a little get together of “The Usual Gang of Idiots” this past Saturday in Manhattan. I was in town teaching a workshop. Here are some pics! From left to right are former editor Charlie Kadau, his lovely lady Ellen Berg Cohen, writers Desmond Devlin and Dick Debartolo*, and former art director and longtime MAD artist Sam Viviano. *Dick is not only MAD‘s Maddest writer, he’s also MAD‘s Fastest Idiot. He’s so fast normal photography… READ MORE

Q: It is acceptable for a caricature artist to work an event knowing a competing artist is working at the same festival or art fair, etc.? A: Yes. If those running the fair or festival are willing to rent space to vendors selling the same products then there is nothing wrong, both commercially and ethically, with having multiple caricaturists at the same event. Many large fairs or festivals have several different caricaturists set up in different locations. I even know of at least one major theme park that has two different caricature companies with booths in the SAME PARK. That is unusual… most of the… READ MORE

My workshop in Long Island City starts today and runs through the weekend. We’ll be busy drawing in the Big Apple! Above is the class illustration I do for every workshop. All students get a print of it to get signed by there fellow students and myself. At the end of the weekend I draw a name for someone to take home the original inked artwork. READ MORE

Due to a last minute cancellation I still have one spot open in my workshop in Toronto on June 1-3rd. I won’t be back in Canada anytime soon, so jump on that! In other workshop news, my August 14-16th London workshop is back to being sold out and the November 9-11th workshop in Los Angeles is also sold out. However, as you can see with the Toronto one, spots do open up and sometimes at the very last second, so email me and get added to the waitlist if you wanted to take the class but didn’t pull the trigger in time. Sadly the Sept… READ MORE
