Nick Meglin 1935-2018

June 3rd, 2018 | Posted in General

This art was for Nick’s “MAD Book” given to him at his retirement Nick Meglin was the only person I ever knew who I would look forward to being insulted by. The world got a little less funny and MAD Magazine lost a large part of its heart and soul yesterday with the sudden passing of Nick from a heart attack. He would have been 83 next month. If there was an official title of “Unsung Hero of MAD Magazine”, Nick would without question wear that crown. While Al Feldstein got a lot of the credit (and MOST of the money) from the success of… READ MORE

Here’s a couple of links to some terrific reads on this and that: Mental Floss has an article on the “15 Secrets of Caricature Artists” by Lela Nargi. Medium contribtor Nell Minow writes about the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Weekend, and specifically about the great line up of speakers and panels that were there, including the MAD Magazine panel.. The Hollywood Reporter…uh… reports about the great Stan Sakai being the first honoree of the Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award from the Kubert School and Atomic Crush Events at Ontario’s Comic Con Revolution earlier this month. Stuff From My Studio: The Reuben!

I just returned from another fabulous National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award Weekend, this time held in Philadephia. It was a great time as usual, planned and hosted by NCS President and first-lady Bill and Kayre Morrison. Getting to hang out with so many of my peers whom I respect and admire is one of the highlights of my year. Receiving the statuette above was one of the highlights of my life. This is THE Reuben Award, designed by Rube Goldberg himself, which I was honored with at the 2012 Reubens in Las Vegas. This year’s winner was animation legend Glen Keane. His and the names… READ MORE

Monday MADness- My First MAD job!

May 28th, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

I was at the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Weekend in Philadelphia and sat in on a MAD magazine panel. During the panel, I was asked about how I got started with the magazine. I thought about it afterward and it was basically exactly 18 years ago, shortly after the 2000 Reuben Weekend, that I got my first assignment from MAD. It was a three pager entitled “MAD‘s Cable TV Viewing Odds” written by John Biederman. This job was what is called an “evergreen” feature… meaning it is not timely and can be run virtually at any time when they need a couple of pages… READ MORE
