Workshop News: Amsterdam 2019!!

December 14th, 2018 | Posted in General

I finally found a venue and a way to make a workshop in Amsterdam work, so it’s officially on for June 22-23rd, 2019 at the fabulous DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station, right in the heart of Amsterdam!! This will be a little different than my usual workshops. I found it VERY expensive to book a space in Amsterdam, so I have reduced the number of days from 2 1/2 (Friday afternoon, Sat and Sun) to only the weekend. The workshop will go from 10am-6pm on Saturday June 22 and 10am to 5 pm on Sunday, June 23. That’s a reduction of 5 hours of… READ MORE

A Listless Story Sneak Peek!

December 13th, 2018 | Posted in General

As promised, here’s a look at the splash page of the parody of “A Christmas Story” in MAD #5, written by the Grinchy Desmond Devlin. You just might be seeing more parodies of classic or cult movies now and again in the pages of MAD. One of the challenges with doing films these days is that by the time we’ve seen it, the writer writes the scripts, the editors edit it, the art department lays it out, the artist draws it, the art department does the production, the issue is printed and distributed the movie is yesterday’s news. Sure, we will keep doing new movies,… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Art Books?

December 9th, 2018 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Besides your book, what books do you think should be on any artist/cartoonist bookshelf? It can be instructional or inspirational. A: Like many artists I’m a bit of an art book junkie, but like many artists far too many of the books I get end up decorating a shelf and and only skimmed or read once. There are a few that are pretty well thumbed on my bookshelves though. Here are some that I consider classics, and which are not left collecting dust on a shelf. I have included only instructional or reference books here, as “inspirational” books would be too numerous to list… READ MORE

Ultimate Live Caricature Book Is Out!

December 7th, 2018 | Posted in General

Way back in February I posted a rare link to a Kickstarter campaign for a book that was to celebrate the art of “live” caricature, meaning the kind that s done in quick fashion from a live model at a theme park, fair, festival, event or on the street. The brainchild of artist Manny Avetisyan , “The Ultimate Guide to Modern Live Caricature” features multiple caricatures of the different subjects that show the incredible diversity of the artform. You’ll see caricatures that range from cartoony to realistic to the bizarrely abstract, and anywhere in between. It’s really cool to see how different artists interpret the… READ MORE
