Sketch o’the Week- Marlon Brando!

July 1st, 2020 | Posted in Daily Coronacature

Here’s my take on Marlon Brando for both my SotW and Tom’s Daily Coronacature. This is another good example of doing a caricature of a character as much as of the actor. Brando would often transform himself in roles to the point of being almost unrecognizable as himself. In “The Godfather” this was particularly true. The make-up played a part but it was the way he spoke, held his head with the heavy jowls jutting forward, had the sleepy-lidded eyes, that created the “presence” of Don Corleone. The makeup created the thick eyeliner/lashes and the “mumps” look in the jaw. Those are the things one… READ MORE

Carl Reiner 1922-2020

June 30th, 2020 | Posted in General

Planet Earth lost another legend of comedy yesterday with the passing of Carl Reiner at age 98. What a mark on the world of humor he made. I did the above pencil for a project for the Palm Restaurant back in 2014. I’m not sure if the art ever made it onto the wall of any of the Palms, but I thought it was a funny gag… that Judd Apatow was a comedic descendent of the Mel Brooks/Carl Reiner school of film humor. RIP Mr. Reiner. Keep ’em laughing up there. READ MORE

MAD #14 Sneak Peek- Olympic Cheats!

June 30th, 2020 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD #14 is a tribute issue to the recently officially retired Al Jaffee, who is inarguably one of the greatest cartoonist to ever put pen to paper. The issue is full of reprints of some of Al’s notable pieces, like his first-ever “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions”, and some famous ones he’s either written, drawn, or both. Even the reprinted movie parody of Steve McQueen‘s “Bullet”, drawn by Mort Drucker, was written by Al. It also contains his final original fold-in, which he did in 2014 in anticipation of his retirement. A few other articles are new ones inspired by some of Al’s famous features.… READ MORE

MAD #14, the Al Jaffee tribute issue, dropped last week… if you can find a place to buy it that is. Almost all the material inside is either reprinted work done by Al, written by Al and drawn by another artist, drawn by Al and written by another writer, or new pieces done as an homage to Al and Al inspired features. Here’s the contents: Cover (Writer: Al Jaffee, Artist: Sam Viviano) Interior Cover (Al Jaffee) Stinky Old Miner’s Feet* (Dave Manak, Al Jaffee) MAD #214, Apr 1980 The Space Age Razor Race* (Al Jaffee, Idea: John Wick.. not that John Wick) MAD #208, July 1979 MAD’s Amazing Two-In-One Products (Kerry Callen) … READ MORE

Tom’s Daily Coronacature- Me!

June 26th, 2020 | Posted in Daily Coronacature

So on day 101 of “Tom’s Daily Coronacature”, new stewards Bob Murphy and Dave Snyder had me as the subject! I saw a lot of really great caricatures of me! As it happens, I had to do a caricature of myself this week for another project, so I officially hit 101 days! This one is in brush pen. READ MORE

SAD MAD News

June 26th, 2020 | Posted in MAD Magazine

With the Daily Coronacature going the last 100 days I have hardly posted any news or other stuff… I’ve been too busy drawing! So, it’s time to address the latest MAD news, which is not all that good. MAD #15 is due to be released in August and will contain some new material. Back in late May MAD stopped accepting solicitations for new work “for the rest of the year”. That includes the year end issue, which is traditionally the “MAD 20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things” of the year. Projects already in the pipeline would be completed, but nothing new would be commissioned except… READ MORE

Tom’s Daily Coronacature Book!

June 25th, 2020 | Posted in Daily Coronacature

Well, that’s a wrap! 100 days of posting a subject and doing a caricature every day! Whew! It’s been a wild ride but a lot of fun… although it’s put a serious crimp in my studio work. Thanks to everyone who participated! We saw a lot of great caricature art and a lot of earnest effort. Well done, all! Just another reminder that even though I am stepping back, caricaturists Bob Murphy and Dave Snyder are taking the reins and will continue “The Daily Coronacature” in the same format: a new subject each morning along with a few reference pics to get you started. Your… READ MORE

Tom’s Daily Coronacature: The Beatles!

June 24th, 2020 | Posted in Daily Coronacature

I confess I did this one yesterday in anticipation of today’s subject… I wanted to spend some extra time on it. I’m a huge fan of The Beatles and wanted to do the band justice. Well, that’s it! 100 days of a new caricature every day. I’ll post a wrap up of all this tomorrow, with a bit of related news. Right now I’m too exhausted! READ MORE
