Sunday Mailbag- Using Assistants?

February 8th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Do you work with assistants and if not, why ? A: For those who might not know this, some cartoonists have assistants that do certain tasks for them in order to get work done more quickly and, thus, be able to accept more work. These tasks can range from minor stuff like erasing the pencil lines from inked boards to major stuff like literally doing all the work (called “ghosting”). In most cases these assistants get paid but get no credit on the final work. This practice has been around since comics began, and in fact was very common in the early days of… READ MORE

The Walking Sketches: Merle!

February 6th, 2015 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

In honor of the start of the second half of the season of “The Walking Dead”, I’ll be doing a few more “Walking Sketches”. Here’s Michael Rooker as Merle Dixon. Incidentally, this is not the first time I’ve drawn Micheal Rooker. I did a few caricatures of him for some film credits and as props in the super-hero spoof film “Super Capers”. These were used as prop oil paintings in his evil villain office: READ MORE

February 4th, 2015 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Monday MADness- Todays Movie Parodies

February 2nd, 2015 | Posted in Monday MADness

The following is largely from a previous blog post from 2006, updated a bit to reflect the current state of MAD‘s movie parody output today: I get questioned a lot about the state of MAD movie parodies, usually from people lamenting them as shorter, less frequent and targeting only blockbusters than the ones in the past. There was a time when the latest issue of MAD could be counted on to have at least one movie parody and one TV show parody in it, and often more than one. The parodies averaged over 6 pages in length, and the targets were usually highly regarded dramas… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- RSI Trouble?

February 1st, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: A few months ago I finally got my first serious contract as a freelance illustrator, but unfortunately, almost at the same time I started feeling slight twinges in my wrist, that initially just came and went, but now they’re starting to last longer and increase in intensity as well. I have been considering getting a Cintiq (now I’m using a tiny Bamboo, that I think because of its relatively small surface being mapped onto a bigger screen kind of forces me to concentrate too much on getting my lines right and thus grip the pen too tightly). Do you think that could be a… READ MORE
