MAD About ISCA

November 14th, 2016 | Posted in News

The International Society of Caricature Artists is a worldwide organization of caricaturists that welcomes all practitioners of the art form, from live street artists to gig/event artists to illustrators to fine artists and everywhere in between. If you do caricature, you are part of their family. Every year they have a big convention/competition somewhere in the U.S., where hundreds of caricaturists from all over the planet gather and draw each other silly for 5 days, eventually voting on winners in many different categories and crowning a “Caricaturist of the Year” (aka the “Golden Nosey”). They also have a lineup of speakers and presenters. This year… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Caricaturing Animals?

November 13th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: You put a lot of effort into your caricatures of people, and they’re brilliant. Your animals are also brilliant. How much effort do you put into animal caricatures? A horse is a horse I guess, but there are many breeds of dogs to get right. How hard is it to do them all in your style? And what happens when you have to draw an animal you’ve never done before? A sloth? Or a horseshoe crab? Or a giant weta? A: Thanks for the kind words! I’m not sure “caricature” is a term you can strictly apply to an exaggerated drawing of something other… READ MORE

Tremendous Tom Bunk!

November 11th, 2016 | Posted in General

Last weekend I was in Dallas TX hanging out with a bunch of fellow members of the Usual Gang of Idiots at the 3rd annual “MAD About Dallas” show. The very talented lineup was David DeGrand, Kit Lively, Scott Nickel, and the incomparable Tom Bunk. I’d met Tom a few times at various MAD events, but never got a chance to spend any time with him. I’ve been a fan for a very long time, going back to his “Wacky Packages” and “Garbage Pail Kids” days. His work for MAD is ridiculously entertaining. It was great getting to chat and watch him draw for fans.… READ MORE

Special Guest at Delhi Comic Con, India!

November 10th, 2016 | Posted in News

This is crazy, but I am going to be a special guest at the Delhi Comic Con, New Delhi, India on December 9-11th. I’m being joined by fellow special guest Erik Larsen of Image Comics “Savage Dragon” (among lots of other things) fame for the three day event. I’m honored and humbled by the invitation… also I love curry. I’ll be doing a presentation and participating in a few panels as well as signing stuff and meeting and greeting fans (I’m assured MAD magazine is well known in India… really??). I guess we’ll find out. READ MORE

The Los Angeles chapter of the National Cartoonists Society is having a chapter benefit event this Sunday at the home of Sally Lazarus (widow of the late great Mell Lazarus) featuring a live auction with a ton of awesome original cartoon artwork. Check out the lineup on the promo above… I count eight Reuben winners. You can see all the items from the auction and all the details on the LA Chapter website. I donated a page from MAD‘s parody of “True Detective” in issue #528. This is a live auction only, so there is no online bidding. You would need to RSVP and attend… READ MORE

Monday MADness: Me by Sergio!

November 7th, 2016 | Posted in General

The incomparable Sergio Aragonés regularly creates masterpieces, but a couple of years ago he did a piece for a MAD book that is a true work of genius, even by his standards. In the book Inside MAD, Sergio created a fold out spread that depicted virtually every major contributor to the magazine in it’s 60 plus years of publication. I’m not sure what the criteria was that determined if an artist/writer/editor was included, but I was grateful to be one of them. Above is a closeup of me by Sergio! You can find an interactive version of the entire spread, complete with pop up legends… READ MORE
