I’m afraid I have to cancel my workshop in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I thought I’d give it a try since I had a sudden window of time open to do one over those dates, but there was very little follow through despite my getting several emails expressing interest in my doing one there when I mentioned it as a possible spot. Maybe there was not enough time between it being announced and the dates of the workshop. Regardless, no Dallas workshop in March. If you signed up you’ll get a refund immediately for your deposit. This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the finished inks for MAD #449’s parody of of the TV show “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” entitled “Lewd & Disorder: Criminal Malcontent” written by Dick DeBartolo, dated Jan 2005. At the time this was one of my favorite pieces I had done for MAD because it was a lot of fun exaggerating the difference in size of the hulking Vincent D’Onofrio and the diminutive Kathryn Erbe. D’Onofrio was also always doing these weird and uncomfortable things when talking with people where he would lean in and around their personal space, peeking around them with his head… READ MORE

Q: Do you have any tips/suggestions for drawing 3 or more people in a caricature…especially when there’s a baby/toddler involved? I often struggle with letting the kid “take over” the whole drawing (by letting his/her face be larger than everyone else’s). A: Composition is always very important with live caricature, and it gets trickier the more faces are in a single drawing. Even with a single subject, composition can degrade or ruin an otherwise good drawing. Here’s some tips for good composition for various numbers of subjects: One Person- It’s common for a live caricaturist to just start drawing the face without thinking of its… READ MORE

MAD lost yet another long-time contributor with the passing of Gerry Gersten at age 89 on January 12th, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. From MAD: We’re sorry to report that 2017 is picking up where 2016 left off, with the passing of yet another MAD contributor. With his pencil on vellum technique, Gerry produced many full-page impact pieces of art for MAD, including memorable drawings of Ronald Reagan, Dr. Ruth and Elvis Presley. Our condolences go out to Gerry’s family. We will have more on Gerry’s career in MAD #545.… READ MORE

After being in existence for a long time, a blog will have a lot of back content that is buried so deep no one will ever see it unless they specifically search for it… and if they don’t know it’s there they can’t do that, can they? The MAD Blog is going on 11 years old, with almost 4,000 posts and there are a few articles that I am sure many new readers have missed that they would nevertheless be interested in reading. I used to have a page with links to past articles that were popular and of some importance of topic called “Posts… READ MORE
