In honor of those who have fallen in defense of our country and our freedoms, here’s a link to my recap of the first “downrange” USO trip of National Cartoonist Society cartoonists since the Vietnam War. I was lucky to be part of a group that included Jeff Bacon, Chip Bok, Bruce Higdon, Jeff Keane, Rick Kirkman, Stephan Pastis, Mike Peters, Michael Ramirez, and Garry Trudeau. Proud to have been part of that team, which traveled to draw for wounded warriors in Germany and then on to Iraq to draw for troops deployed in the war zone. Q: How important is it that I go to art school if I want to be a cartoonist? A: I wrote a lengthy blog post about this not that long ago. Check it out for a longer answer, but the short answer is your art education is only as good as what it actually teaches you and how it develops and improves your skills and art. It was an intensive, jam-packed week of forums, panels, talks and lectures as well as a lot of touring of J.A.I. and it’s many program exhibits by our delegation from the National Cartoonists Society.
