Bill Morrison Announced as New MAD Editor!

June 26th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Oh, ye of little faith. A week or so back I posted about the uncertainty of MAD‘s future since basically none of the current longtime staff of editors and art directors were moving out west with the closing of MAD‘s NYC based offices. My post was mostly about the fact that DC Entertainment has given no one any idea of their plans or who might be taking the helm of the magazine. I got a number of responses on my Facebook page basically sounding the death knell of MAD, to which I replied: “I think it’s a little too early to be writing MAD‘s epitaph.… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- When Did You Start Drawing?

June 25th, 2017 | Posted in General

Q: What age did you start drawing caricatures? A: I’ve been drawing caricatures all my life, since I was a little kid, I just didn’t know what I was drawing were caricatures. I thought they were just funny drawings of people. It wasn’t until later in life I associated what I was doing with the term “caricature”. When I was in high school I drew a series of comics called “Baby Bill”, which were satirical “adventures” of me and my high school buddies but as babies. These are long lost but thinking back I did infant-version cartoon caricatures of all of us. We were babies… READ MORE

On The Drawing Board- 6/23/17

June 23rd, 2017 | Posted in On the Drawing Board

Actually I am on vacation (sort of, brought some work with me) in Florida right now but here’s what is on the drawing board currently: “Z People” Comic Book– Inking the last of this 47 page behemoth right now. Looking to be done by the end of the month. MAD– Just finished a two page feature for #547 (rare issue without a movie or TV parody for me) but already have the script for a TV show parody for issue #548 Corporate caricatures– I’ve got a new gig doing caricatures of executives/employees for a big tech company. Have three of them in the works right… READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday #38

Doing work in the advertising world can be weird. Often something you might have spent quite a lot of time working on, and which the client was happy with, never sees the light of day in print despite all involved being paid as agreed. That may seem outrageous but that is what sometimes happens in the advertising business. Companies often just burn up money producing images and designs for ad campaigns that never get off the ground. I’ll get paid full rates (and advertising generally pays a lot better than editorial) to do finished art that is only used as part of a pitch to… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Conway Twitty?

June 21st, 2017 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Yes, you read that right. Conway Twitty! Country/rockabilly music star of the 1970’s. Kind of random? Well, one of the things I do at my workshops as a warmup exercise is ask the class for subjects that we then do quick warm up studies of. This was one of the suggested subjects at my recent Pittsburgh workshop. Also, I have been asked to post the reference photo with my sketches. Since I usually use more than one, I don’t usually do that, but in this case we works from one photo. So, here’s the picture and the drawing side by side. Done on a Wacom… READ MORE

History of an Idiot

June 20th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

I do a few comic-cons every year, and I never fail to get this question posed to me at some point during the show: Who created Alfred E. Neumen? That’s a question that has no certain answer, but a lot of interesting history. An ad for dentistry, circa 1910 Pictures like the ones above have been cropping up since MAD first adopted the image of the smiling, idiotic boy who would eventually be known as Alfred E. Neuman. The true origins of MAD‘s ‘mascot’, will probably never be known for certain. Images of the grinning, gap toothed boy have been a part of American pictorial… READ MORE
