This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the original pencil roughs for the Desmond Devlin penned parody of the film ‘Watchmen” that appeared in MAD #499, April 2009. You can see some art notes written in here and there… some were my telling the MAD guys what I intended to do and some was direction from them. READ MORE

Q: Will you please do one of your caricature workshops in my area/backyard? A: I get this one a lot… so often I repost the answer now and then. The answer is “maybe”, but there IS a way you can make it happen if you really want to. I choose where I am going to try and do a workshop based on a few factors. Population, obviously, is a major one. I am going to end up doing three workshops in the Los Angeles area this year. I did one in the New York City area last year and just did another last weekend. I’ll… READ MORE

The crew at MAD Magazine are starting to release little sneak peeks at what’s coming up in MAD #2. The image above is from my piece in the issue, written by Ian Boothby. It’s a VERY close up cropped part of a panel from what is kind of a movie parody but isn’t really a movie parody… but is a movie parody. Why Ms. Pacman? You’ll just have to wait until June 5th to find out! That’s when MAD #2 hits the stands. Incidentally, if you are not following MAD on social media and the interwebbies, what are you waiting for?? They are doing original… READ MORE

Another episode in this occasional feature where I show something from my studio and tell the story behind it. Here we have another seriously awesome Bat-item- a 3 foot tall statue of Bats as he appeared in Frank Miller‘s “The Dark Knight Returns”. That 1980’s graphic novel was what really got me back into comics. I got this as a little present to myself after wrapping up a killer book job. READ MORE

I’m under the gun in the studio suddenly, so here’s an old Sketch o’the Week of rock geezer Ozzy Osbourne that I added some digital grays to for the book. READ MORE

It’s been a while since I posted one of these “On the Drawing Board” updates… above is a fun little spot illustration I did for Scholastic a couple of months ago. A lock of George Washington‘s hair was recently found and authenticated, and this illustrated the blurb about the discovery in one of their magazines. This is a bit of a quiet time in the studio… I’m between MAD jobs and working on several smaller projects, including a few personal illustrations I have been trying to work in around the edges: NCS Reubens Illustration– I did not do the Reuben brochure art this year, but… READ MORE

Okay, the MAD offices in New York have only been closed for about four months so it might be a little too soon to use the word “reunion”, but we had a little get together of “The Usual Gang of Idiots” this past Saturday in Manhattan. I was in town teaching a workshop. Here are some pics! From left to right are former editor Charlie Kadau, his lovely lady Ellen Berg Cohen, writers Desmond Devlin and Dick Debartolo*, and former art director and longtime MAD artist Sam Viviano. *Dick is not only MAD‘s Maddest writer, he’s also MAD‘s Fastest Idiot. He’s so fast normal photography… READ MORE
