It’s very rare that I offer to sell the original art from an entire parody, but due to some sudden household repair expenses I’m making this piece available. It’s the entire 7 page parody of the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things” from MAD #548. Two page splash above, story pages below. If you happened to visit the exhibit “Artistically MAD” at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum last year you saw this entire parody on display. The pages are inked with dip pen/brush on heavy bristol board. The text has been reproduced exactly as in print and pasted up using archival materials. The page… READ MORE

The fundraiser auction featuring Popeye tribute art done for the exhibition at the National Cartoonists Society’s NCSFest is underway, proceeds to benefit the NCS Foundation. My piece above is part of the auction. This was done with real, live watercolor and ink on illustration board. The NCS Foundation does some great work with the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, the Cartooning for Kids program where cartoonists visit children’s hospitals and draw for patients and their families, and the Milt Gross Fund which provides financial assistance to cartoonists in times of hardship. There is a lot of awesome art in this auction by some big time cartoonists.… READ MORE

Announcing my first few workshop locations in 2020! I’m trying to go to some new areas of the country as well as back to some places where the demand is high. So, my first two are a little of both. In January I’ll be doing a workshop in the Big Easy, New Orleans, LA! This one is a destination location for certain. The hotel/classroom is only a few blocks from the heart of the French Quarter, so it will be a lot of fun. In February I’ll be back in Las Vegas, NV. Where we have a great space that is far away from the… READ MORE

Q: Have you seen the “Shaqtoons” thing? What’s your opinion about art contests like this? A: The “Shaqtoons thing” Richard is referring to is this: Multimillionaire Shaquille O’Neal “needs our help”! He wants animators to produce animated shorts for free and submit them for his new “Shaq Life” show. If they pick your video, they will pay you a whopping $500!!!* But it’s not just about the Benjamins. As Shaq says at the end of the video (with a wink) “That’s right animators, I’m going to make you famous.” The small print says they own the rights to any videos you submit whether they pick… READ MORE

I’m putting together my lineup of 2020 caricature workshops right now (in fact I’m announcing two locations on Monday), and the new year will bring a few changes to the format. Most of the feedback I’ve gotten from students is nothing but positive, but one thing I’ve heard from both those who take the workshop and especially those who could not take it is that three days is difficult to do. Right now the format of the workshops is: Friday 1-6 Saturday 10-6 Sunday 10-5 Having part of the workshop take place on Friday afternoon requires participants to have to take a day off of… READ MORE

Deadlines conquered. Back to real life, including getting caught up on my “Sketch o’the Week” action heroes series. I’ve decided to do a series within a series- all seven of “The Magnificent Seven!” I’m starting off with Yul Brynner. As always, the original sketch is available in the Studio Store. READ MORE

Q: At those times when you are really scrambling to beat a deadline and you have absolutely no time to write a long, detailed answer to a Sunday Mailbag question, do you ever just make up a question that is obviously fake, meant as a joke, and is one big, long, run on sentence but only requires a short, maybe even one word answer so you can stop wasting time on the internet and get back to beating that deadline? A: Yes. Thanks to A. E. Neuman for the question. If you have a question you want answered about cartooning, illustration, MAD Magazine, caricature or similar, e-mail… READ MORE
