This week I am a guest on the terrific Comic Lab Podcast with hosts Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett, where we talk caricature and MAD Magazine. If you are a cartoonist but unfamiliar with this podcast, then get familiar with it. Brad (Evil Inc.) and Dave (Sheldon, Drive) are two of the most prominent webcomics artists out there, both in terms of their work and their knowledge of the industry. The ComicLab Podcast is solid gold, full of advice and information on the business and creative side of cartooning in the 21st century. Here’s my annual “what kind of ________ do you use?” post, updated to 2019. Any links are just one possible source for purchase, do some web searching and you are bound to find the same things elsewhere and possibly cheaper. In the Studio For doing my publication work I use a lot of different tools and materials. While most of what I do these days is digital I do occasionally, when the job calls for it, pull out the old paints and such. Here are the tools I like to use in the studio: Pencils– Honestly I usually use whatever I end up grabbing from… READ MORE

Jake Tapper, George Clooney and a few other celebrities are hosting an auction featuring, among other things, some cartoon artwork by the likes of Garry Trudeau, Bunny Hoest & John Reiner, Stephan Pastis, and many others. It’s part of the feature “Xander and Kam’s Sneaky Previews” that was published in MAD #2, featuring a short spoof of the movie “Solo” and a quick appearance by… READ MORE

Back in late June I did a caricature workshop with 16 terrific artists in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It was a great group, and we had a terrific weekend drawing and working together. Unfortunately the timing of the class was tough, because I was up against the print deadline for MAD #9, which included my “Once Upon a Time- Lousy Law” retro parody and the “Lion King” spoof. In fact The Lovely Anna spend the first day and a half seeing the sites of Amsterdam on her own while I was holed up in our AirBnB frantically trying to finish the last of the “Lion King”… READ MORE

Already sold out! Sorry for those who missed out. 🙁 I did this last year and it worked out pretty well (although I started offering them a little too close to the holidays last time, thus the earlier announcement), so I thought I’d give it another go this year. I usually do not do these kinds of commissions outside of comic book conventions (my studio commissions are more elaborate and a LOT more expensive). However, again this year I’m making 15 of these personal caricature commissions available just for the holidays. I’m doing them on 11? x 14? bristol, in brush and various pens, colored with Copic… READ MORE

This is a pencil sketch like most of my other SotW drawings, but I could not resist adding the blue hair after scanning it in… it’s just not Billie Eilish without the blue. Oh yeah, the original (sans blue) is in the Studio Store. READ MORE
