This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the splash page from MAD‘s parody of the “reality” TV show “Dog the Bounty Hunter” from issue #478 (June 2007) written by Dennis Snee. The original of this splash page is somewhere in Colombia when it went missing after a show I was in there for CaliComix. Maybe I should put Dog on the case! READ MORE

Q: You once told a story that when you showed some of your early works to the MAD brass (Sam Viviano, I believe), you were told that it was a bit too much like Mort Drucker’s work, so you reworked your art to distinguish it from Drucker’s. I know that artists all agree that when you’re being paid, you give the clients what they want. However, is it really fair for an artist to be told to “undo” their talent? If someone paints as well as Michelangelo or Norman Rockwell or Bob Ross and their style skews that way (but not intentionally), is it fair… READ MORE

You get a bunch of swag when you take one of my caricature workshops, but one of the really unique things you get is to be drawn by me in the “class illustration” like the one from my January workshop in Burbank above. Everyone gets a print of the art, plus a high res digital copy. Right now I only have 4 available spots in my one remaining U.S. workshop for 2020… Indianapolis in September. Everything else is either sold out or taking place overseas. I might book another US based on in December but it’s unlikely, so Indianapolis will be your last chance to… READ MORE

The folks at ReedPop have officially announced they are postponing Emerald City Comic Con until sometime in summer 2020. I guess my decision to back out of the show was the right one. I think this is best for all involved. Kudos to ReedPop for handling all this with professionalism and concern for everyone involved. I have a lot going on this summer so hopefully the new dates will be ones I can do. If so I’ll see you this summer, Seattle!!! READ MORE

The Lovely Anna and I have made the difficult decision NOT to attend Emerald City Comic Con next weekend due to the fallout associated with the COVID-19 issue. I’m not concerned about catching COVID-19 and frankly I think the panic over it is overblown, but I am concerned about potentially contributing to its spread to people who are at risk for serious issues if they do contract it. I’m also concerned that the panic associated with it might cause us issues getting OUT of Seattle at the end of the show, and with a special needs dependent at home we cannot risk that. All signs… READ MORE

After a couple of years off I was asked to do the artwork for the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Awards Weekend again this year. The event will be in Kansas City (the one in Missouri… you know, where the Superbowl Champion Chiefs are located). The speaker lineup is ridiculous and several people are getting big awards for their contributions to the world of cartooning. Counter clockwise from the bottom left: Georgia Dunn (Breaking Cat News), Jim Davis (some another cat comic), Mark Tatulli (Lio, Heart of the City, Desmond Puckett, etc), Maria Scrivan (Half Full, Nat Enough), Terri Libenson (The Pajama Diaries, Emmie books),… READ MORE
