Sketch o’the Week: Breaking Bad Roughs!

August 1st, 2018 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I’m crazy busy right now and about to start an insane amount of traveling over the next three months. The “Sketch o’the Week” might see some old sketches and work thrown in for the foreseeable future. BUT that gives me a chance to do something I’ve been meaning to do anyway… post some of the rough sketches I did for various MAD jobs both here and in the Studio Store.

These are what I would call “roughs” for the parodies I do for MAD. I do them on the computer most of the time these days, but I spent 15 plus years doing them in pencil at print size, on the printed layouts like you see here. These are the roughs from the parody of “Breaking Bad” that appeared in MAD #516 Aug 2012. Here are the other story pages:

I generally take a quick shot at the caricatures at this stage, although if they are not quite on the money I just move on and fix them at the finals stage. However these quick little sketches capture the likeness a surprising amount of the time. Mostly the purpose of these roughs are to show the staff of MAD what I am planning on doing with the storytelling, composition, layouts and gags. I would scan and email these to the gang and get their feedback and direction, then move on to the final artwork on bigger boards, pen and ink, color, etc.

I have a huge pile of these roughs taking up room in my flat files, so I am going to put some of them up for sales in the Studio Store, including these. They are roughly 11×17 and each board has two pages. Anyway enjoy a look behind the scenes and if you are interested in the originals visit the Studio Store.
