Today I am finally getting my shipment of copies of MAD #548 with my Stranger Things cover and art on Desmond Delvin‘s 7 page parody of the show. It’s available in the Studio Store, signed and everything and vastly overpriced.

  1. It is definitely a must buy. Another great artistic skills show..

What’s the deal with the little white highlights denoting the shininess of the characters’ eyeballs? They seem to be reflecting different light sources? And it’s not consistent, for instance the eyes of the two people on the right, they’re in different places on the eyeballs. Again, the two girls on the right, they don’t line up. Is there something I don’t understand?

    • Tom Richmond says:

The idea is to make the eyes look bright and have some life, not to mathematically map out the exact light source for every reflection and shadow. In order to do that I need the highlights in the iris/pupil areas, not in the sclera which is where they’d end up in some cases. The reflected light and shadows on the faces are not consistent either, but placed to help separate the figures and add some drama. Fortunately there are usually multiple lightsources on any natural scene, and the curved nature of organic objects means that, unless you intend to create one or two specific light sources for a reason, there is plenty of wiggle room.

Also, those two people on the right are boys, not girls.
