Getting new, fresh samples on the walls of my theme park operations was always a challenge… especially since I spent most of my free time doing freelance work. So, since much of my freelancing had to do with caricature, I would often convert the caricatures I did for various jobs into samples for the parks. This sample of comedian Tom Green from 2002 is an example:

I had originally done that caricature for a job for MAD (#406, June 2001):

mtvThis led to the following exchange with a 10 year old kid out at the park:

Kid (looking at the sample on the wall): That’s Tom Green! Who drew that one?

Me: I did.

Kid: I saw that picture in an issue of MAD Magazine! YOU STOLE THAT DRAWING OUT OF MAD MAGAZINE!!!!

Me: I work for MAD Magazine. I originally did that for MAD.

Kid looks at me blankly, blinking several times for a few seconds.

Kid: “Yeah….. RIIIIIIGHT.” Walks way.

Me: …

  1. Ya, that’s definitely a ripoff!

  2. Robert Klotz says:

Sharp eye on the kid to notice. I’ll bet he regrets not buying a caricature from you.

  3. Joel Kweskin says:

Reminds me of a story Walter Matthau told. He was walking down the street and some woman stops him and says excitedly, “I know you! You’re…you’re…uhm…you’re… And Matthau interrupts to say “Walter Matthau?” And the woman says, dismissively, “No…”
