Quick warm up sketch of POTUS today… bet this guy is thinking about cartoonists right now after the events in Paris at the offices of Charlie Hebdo. The National Cartoonists Society posted a condemnation of the attacks this morning.

Regarding the attack, the Cartoonist society stated it well, and we all have the responsibility to talk back to those who would attempt to censor or inhibit our opinion’s. The terrorist coward killers with their “God loves me best!” extremist, delusional, and ultimately humorless perspective, will never win out over love, imagination, and humor.
i love the contrast between how rigid the top of the head is and how organic and soft the lower half of the face is.
I generally love your work, Tom…but since when does Obama have a Cary Grant-like cleft in his chin?
I thought that was odd but the ref pic I used seemed to show a cleft.

But on closer inspection I think it’s an odd trick of combined shadows of the microphone. My bad
You’re still The Man…and I own your book on caricature drawing…but, respectfully, wouldn’t you still use more than one photo as reference, regardless of how you “position” him on the paper?
Sure, I always use multiple references when doing real work, but this was just a quick warm up sketch so I used just the one reference. I’ve drawn Obama a hundred times, so I should have known better with the chin but it was just a quick throw away sketch.
It’s a very good caricature even with the cleft chin. I will however, have concerns that when I next hear the President speak, he will suddenly blurt out – “JUDY! JUDY! JUDY!”.
