Stooges Week! Curly Joe DeRita

I thought I’d get the later Stooges out of the way before getting to the three that most people recognize as the “definitive” Stooges. Today we have “Curly Joe” DeRita, who took over for Joe Besser after The Stooges and Columbia parted ways.

I’m liking the Stooges, and I can see layin’ down some green for a group shot. As I’ve said before, The Marx Brothers would make for a great wall hanging somewhere down the line too!. Including Zeppo, and maybe even Margaret Dumont, the great prim and proper comic foil for the guys. I’m picturing a composition where Dumont is larger than normal in the center, and looking down with concern as the boys are maneuvering about her in some comic endeavors!. Whatever the concept, it would be fun to see!.
I’ve enjoyed all your Stooge drawings so far, but I think this is the best one yet! A lot of artists think that they just need to replicate their hairstyles (I was guilty of that in the past), but you’ve really nailed the likenesses and individual personalities! Superb!
Just a bit of an addition on your caption. DeRita joined them the team after Columbia/Screen Gems sold the original shorts to syndicated TV, for which the boys got nothing! Pretty sad, but with “Curly Joe”, Moe and Larry were able to make a fortune from public appearances. And Columbia got them back for a string of low-budget “kiddie matinee” features (“The Three Stooges Meet Hercules”, etc.), many of which were directed by Moe’s son-in-law, cartoonist Norman Maurer. I don’t know the details, but I hope their old studio paid through its corporate nose! Hello, I’m Jim and I’m a stooge-aholic!
