Video Sketch o’the Week- Morena Baccarin
Here’s another stab at this video sketch thing, this time of Homeland‘s Morena Baccarin, actual drawing time 20 minutes. This time I did a lot more gray scale painting, obviously. Maybe next time I’ll do some color:

A few observations about Morena- she’s obviously a very beautiful woman, but she has plenty of things to exaggerate. Her eyes are very arresting, but they are slightly mismatched… one is flatter shaped than the other, and her pupil/iris is more covered up on that side. She has a wide face with very prominent cheekbones, and a wide nose bridge but a sharp and narrow end of the nose. She has a teeny, tiny mouth that has an interesting puckery look when she does that wry smile. Also, her neck is gigantic. Her trapezoids are very high up on a long neck, giving her a really odd, alien sort of neck/shoulder dynamic. No wonder she was so good in “V”.
One thing I hate about these video sketches…no original sketch. Where’s the fun in that?

I have been a long time follower of your work. I have your book, and have drawn many of you caricatures in my learning process.
I’m writing today to say how much I enjoy the video sketch of the week! It is awesome. Your comments about what you see, and what you have chosen to exaggerate makes it complete. I hope to see many more.

The videos are a great idea. It’s always fun to watch an artist work . . . ur . . . watch his work, work. Love the phaser. Use mine to destroy stupid thoughts that enter my studio. A very satisfying distraction sometimes. Thanks for the peek.
Fantastic. Please keep up these video drawings. It’s very interesting to see it at different stages and see how it is constructed.

Whilst there may not be an original sketch Tom, I really enjoy watching you make the choices you make. The advantage with the videos, is that I can pause it at various spots and think about why you’ve decided to draw the line you’ve drawn.

Obviously proportions – or at least the illusion of proportion – changes with the angle of the head and unless the ears are obvious (Obama, Prince Charles) then the temptation is to draw them simply to the bottom of the nose. But in your reference photos her ears appear quite high (also elongating her nose).
Given there are other photos of her on the net where her ears look longer and her nose looks shorter, my question is, what was your decision-making process in drawing her ears so long in this drawing?
