On the Drawing Board- 12/18/12

General Mills

As is somewhat typical over the holidays, pretty quiet on the freelance front. Very little going right now:

  • Marlin Workplace poster
  • Warner Bros product illustrations
  • MAD #520 assignment (forthcoming… not sure what it is yet)

That’s about it.

The image above is a rare private commission done for General Mills for an executive who was either retiring or getting promoted. I used to do quite a few of these kinds of corporate commissions, including several for General Mills, but not so much anymore. Big companies would commission me to do a caricature illustration of an employee or executive who was retiring, being promoted, having a major anniversary or just needing congratulations for some accomplishment.¬¨‚Ć They would then have framed and present it to them as part of some celebration. The lady above worked with Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart for a series of “Bake-Off” competitions, with lots of prize money, and was known as the “Bake-off Queen”.

At first I was like… okay, I know Oprah and I know Martha Stewart, but I honestly have no idea who that is on the throne. But then I read your description, and it made sense why I didn’t recognize it. I do really like the cupcake scepter. It also looks like a chocolate chip or a Hershey’s Kiss on top of the crown. Job well done, sir!

Tom, I received my personal copy of your book. Thanks so much for the drawing, and the great tips I’ve read so far (just put it down to write this thanks). I will be practicing what you are preaching. It’s already changed the way I view someone. Can’t wait until I can put it to use! Thanks a million!!!

I know I bugged you about any upcoming assignments for MAD, but your teaser is killing me. I’ll just keep hope alive that it will be a movie satire (Skyfall, perhaps.). The last couple of years, you and MAD have skewered some truly deserving TV shows and movies (Glee, Mad Men, Modern Family, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, etc) and have really gotten me back in the “anticipation mode” for upcoming issues. Keep up the great work!
