More Book News
The second printing of The Mad Art of Caricature! has arrived…just in time as I was down to my last hundred or so copies. They look good, with the same high quality, glossy, color pages and tight binding. No new content, but a few stray typos and corrections were made.
The big news this time around is I have an official distributor, Itasca Book Distributors, which means the book will soon be available through wholesalers like Ingram. What this means is that brick and mortar stores like Barnes and Noble will now be able to order and carry my book. Booksellers basically refuse to carry self-published books unless they have a distributor/wholesaler, which is why The Mad Art of Caricature! has not been available in bookstores. Now I have one, so those of you in the U.S. can possibly find it at your local bookstore, or in the book rack of your local art supply store. I am looking in to sending information to buyers at Dick Blick, Utretch, Pearl and Michael’s art supply chains so they know about the book and may carry it. You could certainly order through any retail bookseller once it’s listed with Ingram through Itasca. That usually takes a few weeks.
Of course you can always order a copy directly from me, signed and all!

Congrats on the distributor and selling out your first run, Tom. Hope your future printings keep selling like hotcakes once they reach book/art stores nationwide. Without the maple syrup though! I always love stumbling upon a great instruction book in the art section at Barnes & Noble… can’t wait to see yours on the shelf amongst the rest!

If you are referring to the book being translated into Spanish (or any other lanquage), that is not going to happen. Sorry, but it was hard enough writing it in English.
I wonder if you could use a service like elance to do the translation. Or sell the Spanish rights to a conventional publisher. Provided that the text is in a separate layer, it shouldn’t be too costly and it’s a huge, appreciative market.
The cost of fully translating such a text-heavy book, in conjunction with the illustration captions, and then doing the printing, would be enormous. I do not see coming out of it ahead.
Tom is correct. However, remember we live in an age of miracles and wonder, so anybody with a smartphone can download an app (there are quite a few) and take a photo of ANY text in Tom’s book and translate it to a ton of languages. Granted, the translation is NOT remotely professional, but it is a huge help to understanding and the translation improves a bit day by day. Heck, there are websites that will do it for free, no smart phone needed or necessary. Why should Tom or his publishers spend a dime when the Internet will do the whole thing gratis?
