Sketch o’the Week
I¬¨‚Ćwas inspired in my selection of this week’s SotW subject when I saw this caricature done by artist Rodney Pike on Facebook today. Rodney is a master of photo-manipulation caricature, something he is able to pull off when many people who attempt to do the same thing can’t reconcile the photo elements and the painted elements to create a cohesive whole. I posted the following comment on Rodney’s Faceboook page:
“Pope Benie is a very scary-looking man, even without the help of a caricaturist. He looks a lot like my late grandmother, and I used to cry instantly whenever she looked at me… and that’s when I was in high school.”
After seeing Rodney’s take I just had to draw Pope Benedict XVI today. I do have to chuckle a bit whenever I see a picture of him. I am sure he is a wonderful, kind, and deeply holy man…I mean, you don’t get that job without some seriously angelic qualifications…but let’s face it… he looks more like he should be playing for The Opposition. Anyway, he is a lot of fun to draw… sorry, God.

That’s the great thing about being Protestant…you don’t have to believe he’s anything more than just a man…so break out the caricature pencils!

That’s one of the best Sketch o’ the Week you have ever done! It really seems he. How long did it take to make it?
Not sure. Didn’t pay attention to the time but I did get absorbed in the cross hatching. Close to an hour, I think.

I get inspired by Rodney’s work as well. I am glad I have gotten to Hangout with him on G+ as well as in NYC earlier in the year. Great guy.

Tom, You may not be old enough to remember, but This caricature really reminds me of “Simon Bar Sinister” from the old UnderDog cartoon from the 70’s. Great drawing…awesome.

Ah yes, I remember Underdog. I still bite quarters to check if they are real because of that cartoon… except I boil them in disinfectant first. Underdog probably had a super-immune system so he didn’t have to worry where that quarter had been…
A mug like that makes good speculation in the running for anitchrist. Your depiction will make me smile during Easter Mass. In all fairness, Martin Luther wasn’t much of a looker either. But enough “Pontiff”icating.
I just had to leave a comment telling you that I just about fell out of my chair with that quip about your grandmother…I hadn’t laughed that hard in a long time and wanted to say thanks – I really needed it.
Also, I just got your “Serious Guide to Drawing Funny Faces” book in the mail. I’ve had terrible difficulty putting it down and I’m so, so, very grateful that you put in the time and effort to make it available so lowly grubs like me can start ruining people’s faces. Well, I didn’t need your book to do THAT, honestly..but hopefully I will become a better artist because of your guide.

Greetings, Tom…sorry to bug you again, but I just burned through all the “body parts” of your book, and although your treatment of drawing the hand is hands-down (HAR!) the best I’ve seen, I always have trouble with the arms – foreshadowing and attaching them to the torso naturally. That, as well as legs and feet.
I always hork proportion.
Would you happen to have a resource online anywhere where you’ve gone over those things as well? I found your inking introduction with the little old lady carrying the football so I’m hopeful that you might. I’ve learned not to swallow my pen nibs anymore, so I will try to learn any morsel you happen to have laying around.
Nope, I haven’t written any tutorials on figure drawing. That’s a big topic, and there are lots of great resources for it.
