Green Lunkhead Sneak Peek

June 18th, 2011 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Yesterday MAD‘s new blog, The Idiotical, posted the splash page I did from the parody of Green Lantern in MAD #510:

Interestingly, they also posted the rough pencil sketch I initially sent them to approve:

As you can see, the “finger” gag got nixed. I didn’t think that would make it by the editors, but you can’t blame a guy for trying . . . just looking to be a little edgier. Here are a couple of other panels from the parody:

I’ll post the table of contents if I ever get a copy of the fershlugginer thing.

  1. Bill Karis says:

Great movie, and from the look of it, a great parody!

  2. Beast says:

Geez. MAD Really went corporate. They couldntr run your finger gag. The same magazine that put the finger on their cover in the 70’s

  3. Anton Emdin says:

Very nice – looking forward to receiving my copy. Brilliant splash page!

  4. MarkF says:

Just picked up the MAD issue. Loved the movie, and I loved the parody too!!! Amazing artwork Tom!!!

Just for fun(plus I wanted to beat MAD to making fun of my favorite comic-character before they did), I did my own version of a MAD-styled splash page of Green Latrine back in April. The art and comedy isn’t anywhere as good as Tom and Desmond’s, but hope you all enjoy. 🙂

Thanks Tom!!! I really appreciate it!

  6. Adam says:

Great issue as always! I’m also surprised at the middle finger nix, especially given the dialogue I have been reading in there as of late. More than a few adult level type words in there!

  7. Calvin says:

Is MAD perhaps trying to be a bit more kid friendly due to their show on CN? That’s the only explanation I can think of for the middle finger nix. They had the bird on their cover 3 TIMES.

    • Tom says:

It might be the editors just decided that the gag wasn’t funny or relevant. It happens. Not all my gags get approved. In the same article I have a subtle sexual gag on page 3, panel 3 that was relevant to the text that they had no problem with.
