Caricature Video- Rodney Dangerfield 1993
Well, ask and ye shall receive… sort of.
I promised on Sunday I would dig up an old video montage I had made back in 1993 of me doing several caricature samples in time-lapse format for my caricature locations. The father of one of my caricature artists did video editing work, and put together this demo video for me. We used it as a looping display at my booths in the Mall of America and at Underground Atlanta, and in between each “sample” there was text telling people how long they took, etc. This video is ancient… to give you an idea it was originally on a VHS tape using a repeat-play VCR as DVD was still too new and expensive back in ’93!
I found the DVD yesterday and proceeded to edit it to single sample videos. The time lapse brings each drawing down to about 2 to 3 minutes, actual drawing time is about 10 to 12 minutes. By the way, he did the music so don’t ask. I know… it’s weird.
Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that these drawings are over 18 years old (they were samples long before I redrew them for this video). I had only been drawing caricatures for about 5-6 years. Not exactly my idea of work I am proud of today, but it is what it is. There are several others so I will upload them now and then.

Do I wondered if you had done Rodney a number of times before this was filmed? You did’t seem to block anything out and just from the eyes outward…is that still your typical work process? Thanks for the blog, I really enjoy it.
This is the actual process I use when drawing live. I do not sketch or do any “underdrawing” first. I start with the interior features, usually with the eyes, and work my way outward. It is a 100% spontaneous drawing. Now, I had drawn that particular caricature of Rodney several times in the past, as it was a standard sample of mine at the time, so it’s hardly a fair example of a true spontaneous drawing from a live model, but the process is the same.
Great stuff. Royalty free music doesn’t tend to sound like Van Halen or Bach for that matter.

When this video played at Underground Atlanta, people were convinced that it was a video feed of the artists working on the other side of the booth (despite the lack of video hardware over the artist’s shoulder). They would stand in front of the monitor (instead of behind the artist) and keep looking back and forth – from the subject being drawn to the video – with a look of confusion, since the 10 year old girl being drawn bore only a small resemblance to Rodney Dangerfield.
The drawing is amazing, and actually I quite like the song. It has that kind of “magic” that people usually associate with art.
Wow! Brilliant!!! Thanks alot for posting this Tom. Its amazing to see how skillfull you were early in your career. It would be really interesting to see how you would approach drawing Rodney nowadays, just to see how your style has evolved over the years.
