Sketch Week- Saturday

We bring this second installment of “Sketch Week” to a close with a long promised caricature of “The Office” star Steve Carell for my pal and fellow caricaturist Jim Batts in St. Louis. Jim asked me to take a crack at Carell some time ago but I never seemed to remember to look him up as a sketch subject until today.

I’m not sure how well I captured him, because…. well, I have a confession to make. I have never seen one second of anything with Steve Carell in it. I’ve never seen “The Office” or any of his movies. That always puts the caricaturist at a disadvantage because they are then at the mercy of the whims of the photo reference, and have no insight as to typical expression or their ‘persona’. Fortunately I have seen a lot of him on TV just via commercials and other appearances for this and that, so that helped.

Thanks for visiting during “Sketch Week”. We’ll have another one in the early New Year. In the meantime tomorrow will be the usual “Sunday Mailbag” and look for a sneak peek and behind the scenes rundown of my contribution to “MAD‘s 20 Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2008″ in MAD #497, my “How to Draw Hands” tutorial and much more next week!

Tom, again a great job. I am a huge fan of “The Office,” it’s a very well-written show. If it can maintain its pace, it could be mentioned among the best TV sitcoms in history. I am also a huge, huge fan of “Sketch Week” ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ Wonderful and amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing!

I have been told by many people the “The Office” is hilarious but TV is something I just do not have time to watch much of. There are a lot of really good shows I don’t get to watch. 🙁

Well worth the wait, Tom. When you were at the station Summer before last you whipped up a quick sketch of his old Entertainment Weekly cover photo that was great. This one is much better since you seem to have really captured his Office character’s attitude. It’s amazing that you got that without ever seeing the show. I guess it’s pretty unlikely that MAD will get around to a parody. Oh, well. I can still hope for Mad Men.

Nice take on him – like the angle you chose – really captured his character!

Nice likeness, though from what I’ve seen of him in his movies, Steve typically has a less serene and more demented look in his eyes. I know people would hang me for saying it and I haven’t seen enough of it to really formulate an opinion, but the Office to me seems to fall in line with the trend of , “the-more-awkward-the situation-the-funnier-it-must-be” formula that a lot of current entertainment media uses. Much like the one-upmanship sensationalism(who can get away with saying/doing the most shocking thing) that shows like South Park and the Family guy use. Not saying these shows aren’t funny, just seems to be a trend/formula there…what happened to subtle humor? Dude, you have to go out and rent “The 40 Year Old Virgin” right now! Funniest movie of the decade, in my humble opinion, though I haven’t seen “Tropical Thunder “yet and hear it’s effin’ hilarious.
