Here’s a few I did this weekend while working at the park. Sorry, some of the pictures are pretty bad:

Great job Tom! What a thrill it is for these people to meet and get drawn by a popular, successful MAD Magazine artist like yourself.
Its not like we can go to theme park or trade show and get drawn by Mort Drucker,Sam Viviano,Jack Davis .
When you draw at your park stands, can you get a full body gag caricature or are they all waist up poses?
Thanks again for showing off your live work Tom!

Thanks, but I was a theme park caricaturist for a lot longer than I’ve been working for MAD, so it’s no big deal. Also I am no Drucker, Davis or Viviano. In fact my live work is a lot less polished and accurate as it used to be, as I spend most of my time in the studio these days. Live caricaturing needs constant practice to maintain sharp skills, and my leisurely sketching studio days have taken a lot of the zip out of my live stuff. I also don’t tell anyone I work for MAD and don’t allow my artists to mention it either.

I seldom do full body gags as we charge extra for that and people don’t want to pay extra. In fact I keep things in perspective out at the park and don’t knock myself out on the caricatures. They aren’t paying enough for that. I do a good, simple caricature in 5-10 minutes and maybe work in a simple gag. I think they get their money’s worth. I’ve seen artists do $50.00 illustration jobs on $15.00 caricatures.

Gosh, if those live caricatures aren’t “polished” and your skills aren’t “sharp,” then I am truly a chimp with a crayon. Thanks for sharing your live work, great stuff and inspiration for mere mortals!
