Sketch O’The Week

Workshop Warmups: Gene Wilder!

August 7th, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Under a multiple deadline crunch right now so no time for a new “sketch o’the Week”. Instead here’s one of our warmup sketches from my workshop in Washington DC last weekend, Gene Wilder. First thing on the second day of the workshop we do four warmup sketches of subjects suggested on the spot by the class. We spend 10-15 minutes on each. I search for and then project an image on the left and then draw it on the right side as seen above while the class also draws it. It gets us revved up for a long day of drawing. READ MORE

No series of classic action heroes can be complete (or even get started) without Harrison Ford as “Indiana Jones”. As usual, the original sketch is available in the Studio Store. READ MORE

Bonus Sketch o’the Week- Hunter S. Thompson!

July 26th, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

This is essentially a recreation of a sketch cover I did at a comic con some years ago of gonzo-journalist Hunter S. Thompson, done as a rare commission for someone after the sketch they originally had purchased ended up missing. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Rutger Hauer!

I was sorry to hear of the passing of actor Rutger Hauer yesterday. “Blade Runner” is probably my favorite Sci-Fi movie of all time, or at least in the top three. He was one of the big reasons. He could have played the role of Roy Batty as a cartoonish villain, but he imbued him with more humanity than most of the human characters in the film had. I know his career was a LOT more than that film, but that was an iconic performance. Anyway he fits perfectly into my “classic action heroes” series except for the hero part… but I don’t care! RIP… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Big Bang Theory!

June 5th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

I have to cop out this week on a new SotW because… BUSY. However here’s a look at a rare revision on a splash page for MAD. It’s especially relevant since this show just ended a few weeks ago. I don’t often have to do more than minor revisions for my MAD stuff, because the MAD staff knows what to expect from me and I know what they are looking for. Every once and awhile we have differing opinions on what works and what does not. This was the pencil rough for the splash page of MAD‘s parody of “The Big Bang Theory” from MAD… READ MORE

I did this drawing of Alfred E. Neuman as a rare commission for someone today–brush pen and marker on 9×12 bristol. Since today is Wednesday I thought I’d post it as the “Sketch o’the Week”. Then I thought I’d offer to do a limited number of Alfred drawings just because. So, for the outrageous price of $60 (plus shipping) you can be the proud owner of one of 12 original drawings of MAD‘s Chief Idiot. Order quick, when they are gone they’re gone. READ MORE
