Caricature Video- Rodney Dangerfield 1993

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Well, ask and ye shall receive… sort of.

I promised on Sunday I would dig up an old video montage I had made back in 1993 of me doing several caricature samples in time-lapse format for my caricature locations. The father of one of my caricature artists did video editing work, and put together this demo video for me. We used it as a looping display at my booths in the Mall of America and at Underground Atlanta, and in between each “sample” there was text telling people how long they took, etc. This video is ancient… to give you an idea it was originally on a VHS tape using a repeat-play VCR as DVD was still too new and expensive back in ’93!

I found the DVD yesterday and proceeded to edit it to single sample videos. The time lapse brings each drawing down to about 2 to 3 minutes, actual drawing time is about 10 to 12 minutes. By the way, he did the music so don’t ask. I know… it’s weird.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that these drawings are over 18 years old (they were samples long before I redrew them for this video). I had only been drawing caricatures for about 5-6 years. Not exactly my idea of work I am proud of today, but it is what it is. There are several others so I will upload them now and then.

Evolution of the Batman Logo

Interesting video from Wimp.com. The “icons” they cite as evolutionary seem to fluctuate between Batman’s chest emblem from various film/animation incarnations and the logo used on a given comics title, film poster or mini-series cover graphics. It’s not really an “evolution” of the “bat symbol” as much as a collection of different takes on it from different sources in roughly chronological order.

Sorry, can’t embed the video so click on the image or this link to see it. Nicely done, although I find it interesting the creator refuses to let you embed the video but has no problem violating U2′s copyrights for the music.

Top o’the hat to Rick Stromoski at the Wisenheimer board for the link.

Busy, Busy, Busy

… things are getting a little piled up in the studio and with my Valleyfair operation opening this weekend the blog posts may be a little thin this week.

For those who have inquired, the caricature tutorial series will continue later this month or in early June with another installment. Thanks for the interest and I’m sorry for the delays in getting to the next tutorial.

In the meantime, here’s yet another CGI-Superhero video I found on YouTube:

YouTube Preview Image

Not nearly as good as the Iron Man / Spider-Man / Hulk one I linked to a week or so ago, but this one does have some nice moments, especially the Galactus stuff.

YouTube is filled with these fan-made videos. There are endless links to faux trailers for Superhero movies… especially for a Justice League movie using footage from all kinds of different sources.
