Sketch o’the Week

I debated whether to even post this caricature of LOST’s Elizabeth Mitchell as Dr. Juliet Burke, since I lost the likeness somewhere along the way between the rough sketch and the final washes. However, seeing as how I didn’t post one at all last week I’d better get something up today.

Your too hard on yourself Tom. It looks good. I thought Mort did this for a second or two.

  2. can I have a bite of that right cheek?

  3. Leandro says:

Nice sketch, even using straight traces in the jaw she doesn’t “LOST” her female aspects. Something hard that you always advice us to do not have something like a man with makeup..
    Easy for your talent! Congrats!

Looks very cool to me! Love the washes and water-colour technique, awesome!

  5. Jason says:

could you post your initial sketch?

    • Tom says:

Nope, because the sketch was done right on the board before I applied the washes, and I didn’t scan it first.

Basically the missed likeness happened because the sketch wasn’t strong enough to begin with. The likeness was okay at the sketch phase but was too delicate to survive my still developing skills with the ink wash technique. Everything hinges on the drawing underneath… if it’s strong and fundamentally sound it will survive and even thrive under any rendering technique. If it’s a wispy, delicate thing it can get crushed under the weight of the medium of finishing.

Remember these are SKETCHES, folks. I don’t have time to labor over my Sketch o’the Day as if it was a client’s assignment. If your sketchbook doesn’t have a few clunkers in it you aren’t trying hard enough.

Yeah, she looks more like Michelle Pfeiffer. It’s a nice drawing, though, so I’m glad you posted anyway. And your extra comment is spot on.

  7. Tom,

You could repurpose the sketch as Nicolette Sheridan :-)
