Cover Art for Stay Tooned #4

Stay Tooned! #4
The art for the cover of the next issue of Stay Tooned! Magazine.

I have been singing the praises of John Read’s fantastic publication Stay Tooned! for some time now, and was delighted when John asked me to illustrate the cover of the upcoming issue number four AKA the “MAD” issue. The issue won’t be in print until at least next month, but John gave me permission the other day to preview the art I did for the cover.

The issue contains profiles of some of the Usual Gang of Idiots: Sergio Aragonés, Paul Coker Jr., Jack Davis, Don “Duck” Edwing, John Kovaleski, Scott Nickel, Ted Rall and myself, along with the usual other great stuff you have come to expect from Stay Tooned!. It was a fun cover to do and I can’t wait to see the issue. Although he told me he isn’t ready to do so quite yet, I am sure John will start promoting and taking advanced orders for this issue soon.

Here’s some close ups of some of the areas of the illustration:

So keep an eye out for this one coming soon!

That’s gotta be one of the best magazine covers I’ve seen in a awhile! Great work, Tom. You’ve captured everything pretty well perfect – even the naked Alfred (which even though I don’t think anyone wants to stare at, looks great!)

  2. Wow, imagining a naked Alfred gives me a new appreciation for the models we have here at school!

GREAT cover Tom. I recently had the pleasure to check out some issues of Stay Tooned! It’s a really fun magazine with a lot of neat content. Really enjoyed your work in the magazine as well!

  3. Scott Nickel says:

    Tom!

John gave me a sneak peek of the cover on Friday, and, needless to say, I was completely thrilled with the results. You really outdid yourself on this one — the gag is great and the execution is simply stunning. (I’m sure you were asking yourself, “Who the hell is Scott Nickel?”)

As a kid, I used to copy the MAD art of Jack Davis and Mort Drucker and always wanted to be included among “The Usual Gang of Idiots.”

I met Sergio years ago at a CAPS meeting in Burbank (and at the San Diego Comic Con), but never dreamed I’d be on a cover sandwiched between him and Jack Davis. And drawn by a master cartoonist such as yourself. Just too amazing for words.

I feel like Mike Myers in Wayne’s World: “I’m not worthy!”

    Madly,

    Scott

p.s. Love the little “addition” on my shirt. Nice touch!

  4. I think Scott and I have to fight it out for the “newest” UGOI.

It’s a great cover, Tom. I especially like that Don “Duck” Edwing is leaning his sketch pad on my head , and that I am easily the evilest looking UGOI ever.

  5. Monty says:

Beautiful cover! Really enjoying Stay Tooned! and can’t wait for the next issue.

  6. Casey says:

    I love Sergio!
    This looks awesome.

  7. Mugshotz says:

Seems you are getting a good feel for the color line technique. Looking great.

  8. Bucky says:

Tom, great cover! I especially love Jack and Sergio!___Is Alfred a competitive swimmer? I only ask because his body appears to be hairless.____Not that I was looking. Ahem.

  9. Esly says:

FANTASTIC! You bring such life to the ppl you draw. I love it!
