NEW Paint n’ Pixels at MOA Booth

April 6th, 2017 | Posted in News

I recently closed down my combo caricatures and airbrush tattoo booth at Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America and rebranded it “Paint ‘n Pixels”, a caricature booth that offers either traditional airbrush caricatures or ones done 100% digitally… both for the same price. The traditional caricatures are our usual originals done with either graphite or marker (depending on the artist) and airbrush, where you get one original on 12×16 paper. The digital verison is done using ClipStudio Paint on a 16″ Wacom Workstudio Pro, and you getth both a high resolution 12 x 16 print and a screen resolution version either emailed or messaged to you instantly.

The digital side of things still has some kinks to work out. I need to assemble a set of brush tools that work for both the lines and the painting side of things, and I am building a library of illustrated “scenes” where you can have your face(s) drawn on different bodies and in different environments. If we do it right, we can customize the colors of your team uniform for sports scenes, have you as a rock star onstage or a virtually unlimited number of fun environments. The screen display shows the drawing done in real time when doing digital work, and shows a slideshow like in this video when idle or doing traditional media caricatures.

So far so good, although given the choice very few people seem to want a digitally done caricature. I think once we get the library of scenes out there, that will change.

I tried retail digital out at the The Florida Aquarium earlier this year. Same issue thus far. The customer does not understand the difference yet. We will revisit this soon though.

I’ve been thinking about this for Yankee. Given how popular photo booths are at venue’s such as weddings, I think “green screening” the caricatures with backgrounds might be a big selling point with digital…

    Nice looking setup!
